SOUTHERN PROVINCE

"The Home Of The Mighty Victoria Falls"

Overview

Southern Province is located in the southern part of Zambia and comprises 13 districts, including Livingstone, Choma, Mazabuka, and Monze. The province is known for its agricultural productivity and is the country’s primary maize-growing region. Southern Province is also home to one of Zambia’s top tourist attractions, the Victoria Falls, as well as Lake Kariba, a major source of hydroelectric power.

Economic Activities & Challenges

Agriculture, particularly maize and cattle farming, forms the backbone of Southern Province’s economy. However, the province is frequently affected by droughts and land degradation, which impact agricultural productivity. Despite being home to world-famous tourist attractions, the tourism industry remains underdeveloped, with limited infrastructure and services to accommodate large numbers of tourists. Access to irrigation systems and modern farming techniques remains a significant challenge for local farmers.

Development Opportunities

Southern Province holds significant potential for expanding climate-resilient agriculture through irrigation and the adoption of drought-resistant crops. There are also opportunities to develop the agro-processing industry, which could add value to agricultural products and create employment opportunities. The tourism sector, particularly in and around Victoria Falls and Lake Kariba, has untapped potential and could be a major contributor to the province's economy with the right investment in infrastructure and promotion.
