COPPERBELT  PROVINCE

"The Land of Copper"

Overview

Copperbelt Province is Zambia’s industrial and mining heartland, contributing heavily to the national economy. The province consists of 10 districts, including key urban centers such as Kitwe, Ndola, Chingola, Mufulira, Luanshya, and Chililabombwe. It is located in northern Zambia, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with several towns having historical and cultural links to mining activities

Economic Activities & Challenges

The economy of Copperbelt Province is centered around copper and cobalt mining, with large mines such as Konkola, Mufulira, and Chambishi being key contributors to Zambia’s export earnings. However, fluctuating copper prices, mechanization in mining, and environmental degradation present ongoing challenges. The province has experienced mine closures and job losses, leading to high unemployment rates. In addition, mining operations have caused significant land degradation and pollution, affecting both the environment and public health

Development Opportunities

To reduce its dependence on mining, Copperbelt Province has the potential to diversify its economy. Agriculture and tourism are promising sectors, given the province’s fertile soil and proximity to national parks and cultural sites. Investing in agro-processing industries could provide new employment opportunities and support sustainable economic growth. In addition, improved environmental management practices in mining can mitigate land degradation and ensure the province remains economically viable.
