MUCHINGA PROVINCE

"Home of Kenneth Kaunda"

Overview

Muchinga Province, one of Zambia’s newest provinces, was created in 2011 and is located in the northeastern part of the country. It borders Tanzania and Malawi and is made up of 8 districts, including Chinsali, Mpika, Isoka, and Nakonde. The province is named after the Muchinga Escarpment and is known for its rugged terrain and natural beauty, including the Lavushi Manda National Park and the North Luangwa National Park.

Economic Activities & Challenges

Muchinga Province’s economy is largely based on agriculture, with maize, beans, and cassava being the primary crops. The province is also a key transport route for trade between Zambia and its eastern neighbors. However, Muchinga faces several challenges, including poor road infrastructure, limited access to markets, and a lack of healthcare and educational facilities. The province’s rugged terrain and isolation have contributed to its underdevelopment, and poverty remains widespread in rural areas.

Development Opportunities

Muchinga Province has significant potential for growth in agriculture and tourism. With investment in infrastructure, such as roads and irrigation systems, the province’s agricultural productivity could be significantly improved. The natural beauty of Muchinga’s national parks offers opportunities for eco-tourism and wildlife conservation. Additionally, the province’s strategic location on Zambia’s border with Tanzania and Malawi provides opportunities for cross-border trade and logistics.
