CENTRAL PROVINCE

"Broken Hill Man"

Overview

Central Province is located in the heart of Zambia, serving as a link between the northern and southern regions. It comprises 11 districts, including Kabwe, Kapiri Mposhi, Chibombo, and Mkushi. The province is historically significant, as Kabwe was once the headquarters of the colonial administration. Central Province is known for its agricultural production and as a major transportation hub, with the Great North Road and the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) passing through it.

Economic Activities & Challenges

The economy of Central Province is largely agricultural, with maize, tobacco, and sugarcane being the main crops. The province also has notable mining activities, particularly in Kabwe, which is home to lead and zinc deposits. However, Central Province faces challenges such as environmental degradation from mining activities and land degradation due to over-farming. Poor infrastructure, especially in rural areas, limits access to markets, while unemployment and poverty remain significant challenges, particularly among young people.

Development Opportunities

Central Province has potential for growth in both agriculture and tourism. Investments in irrigation, agro-processing, and modern farming techniques can boost agricultural productivity. The region’s central location also makes it ideal for logistics and trade-related industries. In terms of tourism, attractions like the Big Tree in Kabwe, Mulungushi Rock of Authority, and the Lukanga Swamps could be developed further. Sustainable mining practices and environmental rehabilitation are also critical for the province’s long-term development.
