NORTH WESTERN PROVINCE

"Mining Home"

Overview

North-Western Province is located in the northwestern part of Zambia and is known for its vast mineral wealth. The province comprises 11 districts, including Solwezi, Kasempa, Mwinilunga, and Zambezi. It is a key region for Zambia’s mining sector, with major mining operations like Kansanshi, Lumwana, and Kalumbila contributing significantly to the national economy. The province is also home to the source of the Zambezi River and is rich in natural resources

Economic Activities & Challenges

North-Western Province’s economy is largely driven by mining, particularly copper and gold. However, the province faces several challenges, including poor road infrastructure, environmental degradation due to mining activities, and limited access to social services in rural areas. While mining has brought economic benefits to the province, it has also led to rapid urbanization in Solwezi, creating pressure on housing, healthcare, and education services.

Development Opportunities

North-Western Province has the potential for diversification beyond mining. Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of cash crops like maize and tobacco, presents significant opportunities for rural communities. Tourism is another area with untapped potential, with attractions like the West Lunga National Park and the Zambezi River offering opportunities for eco-tourism and adventure tourism. Investment in infrastructure, particularly in roads and social services, is essential for connecting rural areas to urban centers and promoting inclusive development.
